Description
The
capital of Maranhão state was founded in 1615 by the French and lately
taken by the Portuguese. The city has about 3500 historical buildings, and
over 1100 of them are considered by Unesco as Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. Amongst the many yearly cultural events, is the
"Bumba-Meu-Boi", which is very popular and takes place in June.
Other attractions include the hot climate all year round and the beaches.
