Description
The
state of Rio has a privileged coastline, with many islands, beaches, friendly
fishing towns, bays and abundant marine life. Below we have a short
description from the main areas:
Búzios
This
old fishing village became famous in the 60's with the arrival of Brigitte
Bardot, who adopted the place as her favorite holiday resort in Brazil.
The
beautiful beaches, night life, art galleries and the international
atmosphere make Búzios one of the most
charming
beach destinations of Rio.
Angra
dos Reis / Ilha Grande
Angra
dos Reis has 365 islands, one for each day of the year, and
around 2000 beaches. With such big numbers, it's not surprising the variety
of activities available in the area. The inumerous islands with emerald
color bays, beaches and waterfalls are of singular beauty, and the perfect
place for waterports such as diving, sailing, boat tours, trekking, canoying,
ski, jet ski, surfing and rafting, among others. Or, if you prefer, just
chose a different beach every day and relax in the sun... The waters in
Angra are calm and warm, and a boat tour is also a great option to see more
of this piece of paradise.
Ilha
Grande is the biggest island of Angra, and has many beautiful waterfalls,
mountains and over 100 beaches, with many good diving sites, including
shipwrecks. The island also has inumerous trails in its almost untouched
environment.
Paraty
Paraty
is a small city on the coast, founded in 1667. It had some economic
importance in Colonial Brazil with many sugar-cane mills and being
the harbour through which the gold and precious stones left Brazil for Portugal. The route was called Caminho do Ouro "the Gold Way", a
road 1200 km long between Paraty and Diamantina, passing Tiradentes and Ouro
Preto, in Minas Gerais. Nowadays Paraty is famous for its colonial history
and beautiful nature. Islands, beaches, waterfalls, native forest and the
beautiful historical centre are the main attractions.
Cabo
Frio / Arraial do Cabo
Located
159 km from Rio, Cabo Frio is the main tourist point in the Região dos
Lagos "The Lake Area", with beautiful beaches with clear waters,
dunes and lakes. Cabo Frio is one of the main productors of salt in the
country, and it offers exceptional conditions for watersports such as diving,
surfing, fishing and specially sailing, due to the perfect conditions found
there. Cabo Frio also has a rich story, starting from the 1600's, with many
monuments, churches and a Fortress. Arraial do Cabo is about 20 km away from
Cabo Frio, and its 35 beaches are also excellent for watersports and fishing.
About 60 % of the population live from fishing. The variety of the marine
fauna is due to the fenomena of resurgence, when currents with cold waters from the
South Pole come to the surface, bringing with it many nutrients to enrich
the local waters.
Penedo
(Mountainous area)
About
170 km from Rio, the area where Penedo is located belongs to the Itatiaia
National Park. It's a beautiful mountainous area, covered with the Atlantic
Forest, with pleasant temperature and surroundings. The small town was
colonized by immigrants from Finland and the architecture, gastronomy and
local costumes such as saunas, are still present in Penedo.
