Description
Situated
in the margins of Rio Cuiabá, for centuries the river was the only
access to the city, one of the most western cities of Brazil. The capital
of Mato Grosso State was one of the most populated in the country in the
1700's, thanks to the gold mining.
Due
to its geographic isolation, it has an interesting mixed culture-
indigenous, Paraguayan and Bolivian influences. It's also one of the
hottest cities in the country, with temperatures getting to 43 degrees
Celsius. Points of interest include harmonic colonial architecture,
beautiful churches and museums with fossiles and artifacts of the local
indians' ancestors. Cuiabá is also the gateway to Northern Pantanal, and
one of the most
popular areas for sport fishing in Brasil.
Fishing
The
anual cicle of flooding is the main reason for the big diversity and
amount of fish in Pantanal. The species with importance for sport fishing
activities are associated with the areas flooded the most. There are about
263 species listed, and 85% of those are from the Ostariophysi superordem,
including fish like Pacu, Dourado, Pintado and Cascudo. The
phenomenon of "piracema", with the fish migrating upcurrent for
reproduction is observed in Pantanal and during this period fishing is
forbidden.
