Description
The
islands of the National Park of Abrolhos are located 65 km from the coast
of Bahia and the city of Caravelas. There are five islands plus the Reef
Timbebas. Crystal clear waters with
temperatures between 24 to 28º C, create an ideal environment for corals
and fish to develop . Diving is excellent in Abrolhos, and it's possible
for both certified divers or begginers. The
main attraction from July to November is the
arrival of the Humpback Whales to this area to mate and give birth. It
is incredible to encounter these creatures in nature and have the
opportunity to take pictures. The whales are protected and it is forbidden
to go within 100 meters of them but you will still get to see and hear the
whales. In
the year 2000 there were 800 adults and 74 babies
recorded.

Snorkelling,
diving and boat cruises for photo safaries are the main activities.
Opening
Days
The park is open everyday. Several boats offer one-day or longer
excursions to the islands. Water visibility is best from December to
June, about 20 meters. There are specific tours to watch the humpback
whales from July to November. Departures are subject to wind conditions
all year long.
Climate
The climate is determined by air masses that predominate during the
different seasons of the year. The best period is from January to March,
which is the period of calm winds. The temperature varies from 24.4 to
27ºC. Visits to the park are not advised when a south wind is forecast.

Accommodation
There
is no accommodation on the islands as they are a reserve. The closest town
where the boats go out from is Caravelas where there is a small selection of
simple but good accommodation.
